We could waive the probationary period

but I don't much like asking the Gov. to increase the salary, in view of par. 5 of the desp. just below. I don't think people realize what a great advantage they get from the sterling salary being converted at 2/- to the dollar, whilst the

exchange value of the dollar is about 4/-, and we now decided to give officers a temporary loo-

sinking below 4/- or thereabouts. Might not

London,

October

I have the honour to acknowledge receipt of your let. 1920 of the 8th instant, and in reply thereto to inform you. ret being unable to accept the appointment of Superintende t Botanical and Forestry Department, Hong Kong, at the salary," terms and conditions stipulated in your letter of Septembe.

In view of my previous service under the Colonial Office (1902-1910) and an additional ten years experience in Mozambiqu bath America in tropical agriculture and forestry administration, difficult for me to accept such a post as is now offered, on probation, as I feel that my experience of tropical agriculture is both wide and exceptional.

It is probable that the Colonial Office has not a full record of my career, I therefore take the liberty of enclosing a statement of Bane, together with copies of references relating to my services and qualifications.

I also enclose copy of a pamphlet published by the Goverment of Die Republic of Colombia, with whom I last served, giving an account of one of my journeys in that country.

Under Secretary of State,

COLONIAL OFFICE,

London, S.W.I

I have the honour to be,

Sir,

Your most obedient servant,

Mithrawe
